What is Agroforestry?
Integrating trees, pasture, and field crops to create resilient, productive landscapes
Agroforestry, simply put, is the intentional and meaningful combination of trees and shrubs with field crops and livestock. It is both an innovative field of agroecology and one of humanity's original technologies, stewarded through millennia by indigenous peoples.
For more information about agroforestry visit the website of the Savanna Institute, the leading organization developing agroforestry systems for temperate climates.
Common agroforestry systems:

Alley Cropping
Rows of trees or shrubs planted alongside agricultural crops, creating productive corridors that enhance yields, protect soil, and provide diverse harvests throughout the seasons.

Silvopasture
The intentional integration of trees, forage, and livestock a harmonious system where animals graze beneath the canopy, benefiting from shade while enriching the land.

Forest Farming
Cultivating specialty crops beneath the forest canopy mushrooms, medicinal herbs, and shade-loving plants that thrive in the dappled light of woodland ecosystems.
